Cuomo's decision to defend and protect the statue of Christopher Columbus comes amid the social unrest started over the death of George Floyd.
"New York should keep statues honoring Christopher Columbus even though the brutalization of the West Indies inhabitants he encountered on his voyages to the New World is inexcusable," Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Thursday.
This has sparked outrage within communities across America, as has the destruction of many confederate monuments that represent a legacy of racism in America.
